If ABC's most famous housewives were only desperate for critical attention, they can finally rest easy. "Desperate Housewives" and its ABC counterpart "Lost" dominated Saturday (July 23) night's Television Critics Association Awards.

The TCA voted "Housewives" the program of the year. Although the series, heavily toasted with Emmy nominations early this month, received the association's top honor, it lost out to "Lost" in the outstanding new program category. "Lost" also took the series award for outstanding achievement in drama at the ceremony, which was hosted by Craig Ferguson.

New shows ruled the 21st annual gala, held at the Beverly Hilton. In addition to the key prizes garnered by "Lost" and "Housewives," Hugh Laurie, star of FOX's "House," won for individual achievement in drama.

Jon Stewart, whose Comedy Central series "The Daily Show," won a surprise TCA award last year for outstanding achievement in news and information, was back on more solid footing with the individual achievement in drama prize. The series comedy nod went to "Arrested Development," the second year in a row that the FOX series has led the category.

The night's career achievement award went to venerable comic Bob Newhart.
